No matter how hard we try to avoid failure, we are bound to face it in our lives and not only once but multiple times. Just like Einstien said, “A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new”, failures are part of our journey. It is easy to say that we should accept them but extremely difficult to actually cope with failure when it shows up in front of us.

When we face a major setback or fail to achieve something that we worked really hard for, we sink into despair and there are so many emotions that collectively make us feel that there is no hope left for us. So how do we overcome the failure and transform it into an opportunity from which we can learn a lot instead of letting it take a toll on our mental health?

Here I will share some of the ways that successful people recommend dealing with failure and bounce back stronger.

1) Take time to feel your emotions

When you fail at something, for instance, you could not clear the job interview or you got fired from your previous job, whatever it is, it is natural to feel a ton of emotions. You might feel overwhelmed all the time. And this happens to every human being, only the extent differs.

Moving ahead from failure does not mean ignoring these emotions or suppressing them. Take a one-week break and let yourself feel all the emotions. Trust me, this will surely make you feel a lot better.

If you forcefully suppress your emotions, you will not be able to do anything with your 100% potential and you will constantly be afraid of failure. Therefore giving yourself some time is imperative.

2) Find healthy ways to cope with the failure

After facing failure in life, many people resort to unhealthy coping mechanisms which are dangerous for them. You must keep yourself away from them. To make it possible, you have to find healthy ways to deal with the failure.

Start exercising, practice yoga and meditation, go out for a walk, start painting or reading books. Exercising and pursuing hobbies help greatly in overcoming failure. Writing journals is another way that many people find useful.

3) Don’t torture yourself

If you keep blaming yourself for the failure, then it will become very difficult for you to overcome it and especially to move forward. You will find yourself stuck in one place. So after giving yourself a few days of time, you must think about what you should do next instead of beating yourself up for the thing that cannot be changed.

4) Learn from your failure

This is the most crucial part of the overcoming journey. Sit down with a calm mind, identify the mistakes that you did because of which you couldn’t succeed, and jot them down. Do not find excuses or do not play the blame game. Find legitimate reasons behind why this happened.

If you start picking these mistakes one by one and start working towards correcting them or strengthening what qualities you lack, you have turned your failure into a brilliant learning opportunity.

5) Devise a plan for the future

After you have identified your mistakes and learned from them, it is important to create a plan of how you will work in the upcoming days to ensure that you will not repeat your mistakes and utilize your leanings from the previous failure. A carefully thought plan consisting of all the things that you have learned will certainly give you a boost in the right direction.

Concluding lines

In the entire journey of overcoming failure and starting again, you might get negative thoughts and recurring fear of failure. So keep reminding yourself time and again that you can get through this and that you deserve another chance to correct your mistakes and bounce back even stronger.

And do not hesitate to seek professional help if you feel that you are not able to cope with the failure.
